Watch out.. rant coming…

25 Jan

RANT Ok, as a graphic designer, no.. as a creative professional, we in the industry know that there are MANY people out there who undervalue our profession. It’s something we get used to. But does that mean we stop correcting, we stop saying “Hey, wait a minute, you’re wrong”. By not speaking up and telling somewhere that they’re misinformed (you don’t have to be rude about it) aren’t we being apart of the solution? By keeping our mouths shut we in fact become another peg to the overall problem. I got into a little tiff this morning with a marketer. It made me pretty upset. So many people out there who are looking to hire a designer are doing so for the first time. There’s no published rules or regulations.. so these people are winging it. They have no concept that what we’re trying to run is a real, professional, bill paying business. And that’s ok. They just don’t know yet.. so isn’t it OUR job to guide and TEACH our clients and prospectives we come across? Who else is going to do it if not us? By teaching these people and guiding them, aren’t we then saving ourselves time and effort later down the road? I don’t know.. maybe i’m wrong. This guy I argued with this morning didn’t want to spend the extra time to handle it.. even if it meant an extra click of the mouse. In some ways, I understand… we come across this so often that we finally just start to ignore it. But therein lies the problem… in my opinion.

Would LOVE other people’s thoughts on this!!! Am I out in left field with this one?

It seems to me part of the problem is that graphic design is seen as an “art”. People don’t like to pay for art, they like to see it for free. Add in that so many places have templates for everything and you end up with the layperson thinking anyone who can use powerpoint is a graphic designer. Seriously, I run across this DAILY.

I used to get mad. I used to try to (nicely) explain why slapping a template on something and adding clip art into every last bit of whitespace doesn’t make it graphic design. The problem is that, eventually, talking to yourself gets boring.

At one time, I went so far as to have a “brown bag” at work (corporate environment – I’m too chicken to be a freelancer) to try and educate people on the graphic design process. They loved it! Then, they decided they could do it themselves. ack! My desire for job security trumped any desire to educate after that 😉

You’re not out in left field – it’s a tricky situation. People love the end results but neglect to even give a nod to the effort that produces those results.

Hey, thanks! It really is a tricky situation. I’ve come to understand and expect that attitude from clients to some degree. And that’s ok, but when it comes from another “creative” like this one. Oh it just got me frazzled. 🙂 Good to know it’s not just me.
